Tetrarch (governor) of the Roman province of
Galilee, N Palestine, 4 BC-AD 9, son of Herod
the Great. He divorced his wife to marry his
niece Herodias, who persuaded her daughter
Salome to ask for John the Baptist's head
when he reproved Herod's action. Jesus was
brought before him on Pontius Pilate's
discovery that he was a Galilean and hence of
Herod's jurisdiction, but Herod returned him
without giving any verdict. In AD 38 Herod
Antipas went to Rome to try to get Emperor
Caligula to give him the title of king, but
was instead banished.
